Feb 23 - A new experience snowshoeing in the Arctic Circle. Stayed on a working farm. Lucky enough to see the Aurora Borealis. Scenery is absolutely stunning. Also tried dogsledding for the first time.
26/10/19 - Four of us set out on a rainy morning from Horton in Ribblesdale to complete the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge. Within half an hour we began our ascent of Pen-Y-Ghent as the last hour of darkness disappeared. It was a fairly straightforward climb with a small amount of scrambling at the top. As we reached the summit the rain turned to snow leaving a slight covering. We then turned left and headed down across the moors to Ribblehead and its picturesque viaduct. The next leg followed the railway line until reaching Force Gill and its waterfall. From here the ascent to Whernside which had a covering of snow and obscured in cloud. Although the highest its probably the easiest of the three peaks to climb. After walking along the ridge its a fairly steep descent back to 320m and about 4km before the climb up Ingleborough which is quite steep at the end especially with some weary legs. It was then what seemed a never ending descent back to Horton in Ribblesdale, the path was extremely muddy and churned up by the cattle. Everyone made it the full 39km and 1600m of climbing and we certainly looked forward to a pint and some food in The Crown Hotel that evening.
10/9/19 Five of us set out early on a beautiful morning to climb Ben Nevis via the CMD Arete. The climb up to the Carn Mor Dearg is quite a long boggy trek especially at the bottom but with some great views as we climbed. As we reached Carn Dearg Meadhonach we had some amazing views of Carn Mor Dearg and the Ben opposite. From here we had a completely clear view of the Arete ahead which was stunning. We picked our way along the ridge with some mild scrambling. Our final ascent on tired legs was across boulders and scree but every one was in good spirits. The cloud had moved in by the time we reached the summit. It's quite strange to do such a trek and arrive at the summit to see the hoards that have arrived up the tourist track.
In May a group of us travelled to Snowdonia where we did a week of walking and scrambling. The highlight was climbing Snowdon via the Miners Path, scramble up East Peak and then on to West Peak before climbing the summit by the Watkins Trail. A very challenging climb but we were blessed with wonderful weather.
The first part of our Snowdon climb. The path on the far side is the Pyg Track which is the way most people go up Snowdon
